Home Safety Tips

Most of us feel the safest in our own homes however negligent attitudes and impulsive acts can turn even your safe haven into a dangerous place. There are several tips you can use to remain safe in your home.

One of the most important tips to home safety is to always remember to lock any doors leading to outside and also windows even while you are at home. You often hear of home invasions where the assailants didn’t even have to break in, they just tried the door or the windows and found they were open. This might also seem obvious but remember to never open to the door to strangers, especially at night. Many burglars will use emotive tactics and say it’s an emergency or that they need to use the phone immediately but you should always err on the side of caution if there’s no one else in the house.

Let them know you will be happy to call the police to come assist them but you cannot let them in. Be sure to leave all your windows locked at night, even on an upper floor. Potential burglars can see the open window and will definitely find a way in. It’s best to keep some sort of potential weapon near your bed in case of emergency as well as a phone. Make sure family members and children know what to do in case of a fire or emergency and have a list of important numbers in a prominent place in the home for easy access.
