When most people think of San Antonio they automatically think of The Alamo or even The Spurs but something else that almost simultaneously springs to mind is our beloved Riverwalk! The Riverwalk that we know today is a picture of brightly colored umbrellas and tables with tons of amazing restaurants, shops, clubs and bars on either side. The Riverwalk is the number one tourist attraction in Texas according to its official site. The Riverwalk was dreamed up by Richard Hugman in 1929 and was originally named “The Shops of Romula and Aragon”. It wasn’t until 1938 though did they recognize the potential for what the river could really become and they began to move forward creating The Riverwalk as we know today. The project was started in 1939 and Richard Hugman was the architect. The first restaurant opened in 1946 and the rest shall we say is history.
The Riverwalk is supported by the Paseo Del Rio Association which is a non-profit organization whose main goal is to protect and preserve The Riverwalk. While you can always go shopping and get some great food here there are also regular festivals, concerts, arts & craft shows and sporting events, bringing a unique sense of bonding and familiarity to the San Antonio community. This attraction is open 365 days a year and there is always something fun to do. There’s even a dog-friendly restaurant!
The Riverwalk is truly an amazing sight and is something any tourist or visitor to the city should make time to see. It’s a one of a kind Texas experience and even the residents of San Antonio never tire of the sights and beauty of The Riverwalk. For many San Antonio families, “going to watch the Christmas lights” come on at The Riverwalk is a time-honored family tradition. The Riverwalk is a cherished landmark to San Antonio, to the state of Texas and is a prized gem to the whole of the United States and the world. It’s a unique and beautiful place to see and make quality memories with your family to last for years to come!
